2022 DISTELL NATIONAL PLAYWRIGHT OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED
Sibongakonke Mama (33) is the winner of the 2022 Distell National Playwright Competition. She was chosen from a group of five finalists for her isiXhosa and English work, Ibuhlungu le Ndawo.
Currently based in Johannesburg and working as an investigative journalist, she holds an MA in Creative Writing from Rhodes University, graduating cum laude. Born in Gcuwa, Eastern Cape, she has also studied journalism at Rhodes and the University of the Witwatersrand. Sibongakonke’s submission to the Distell National Playwright Competition is her first foray into the world of theatre.
In their comments, the judges highlighted her moving script that weaves oral tradition, grief, cultural and family history through storytelling, children’s games, and ritual.
Set in the fictional village of uMzimkhulu, where three sisters return home to play as a way of remembering and mending familial fences after the loss of a parent, Mama exposes the characters’ building, dismantling and reassembling the playhouse over and over again. Commenting on the human capacity to reboot, Mama presents a spectacular world where the threesome recalls the spirit of their mother who has transitioned to the ancestral realm. She has called the play a poetic and movement meditation on “dis-ease, disease and alienation”.
The playwright award was established by Distell to recognise and reward new, not-yet published script writing talent. Managed by the National Arts Festival, it was founded in 2018, and honours the creative legacy of academics and activists Adam and Rosalie Small.
Apart from the initial prize of R5 000 awarded to all the finalists, Mama receives a further R20 000 as the overall winner of the competition. Part of her prize includes mentorship in fine-tuning her script.
Explains competition facilitator as well as sponsorship and partnerships manager of the National Arts Festival, Nobesuthu Rayi: “She will be supported with extensive rehearsals in bringing her script to the stage. Ibuhlungu le Ndawo will debut at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda in July 2023. This is an important theatrical showcase that acts as a springboard for new talent and shines a spotlight on a new voice in South African scriptwriting. We hope her work will be picked up by producers with a view to staging it across the country so it can be shared widely with South African audiences.”

We believe that to advance playwrighting talent is an important step towards enhancing our ability as South Africans to better relate to each other.”
Ibuhlungu le Ndawo focuses on disruption, loss, and the forging of new relationships from old ones. Mama presents character in limbo between the living and the ancestral realms.
Mama says she has found the initial mentorship offered by the award organisers to be an important way of becoming “acquainted with the theatre way of storytelling”, helping her to “learn and think like a playwright and a theatre maker.” It has also instilled the discipline of working to a deadline, she adds.
Monageng Vice Motshabi, who served as the co-ordinator of the judges and matched the finalists with their mentors, is a theatrical and TV script writer and director.
The judges determining the winner were scriptwriter, actor and festival director, Themba Mkhoma; Namatshego (Tshego) Khutsoane, an arts activist, and Kgafela oa Magogodi, a writer, musician, playwright, and stage director.

The works of judging co-ordinator, Monageng Vice Motshabi have been performed across theatres in South Africa, as well as in Berlin, Germany. He is a former winner of the Standard Bank Young Artists Award for Theatre (2017).

Themba Mkhoma was appointed the first artistic director of the Market Theatre’s revamped Zwakala Festival in 2018. He is an associate lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Drama for Life. He holds an MA in Drama Therapy. He co-created and wrote Siyakholwa, for SABC 1, and has written other scripts for the national broadcaster, as well as for an eTV. He was a script consultant and an actor in Margarine, an awarded film by Thabo Khambule currently featuring on Amazon Prime.
Namatshego (Tshego) Khutsoane has taught acting, directing, and writing at inter alia the Market Theatre Laboratory and the University of Pretoria, and currently teaches at the University of the Witwatersrand School of the Arts. She has also performed in many African and European countries.
Kgafela oa Magogodi teaches creative writing and directing at the University of the Witwatersrand School of the Arts.
Other 2022 Distell Playwright of the Year finalists:
Scout Fynn (English): She is an actor and graduate of the Market Theatre Laboratory. She is currently working as a curatorial intern at the Voices of Women Museum that focuses on the retrieval and preservation of memory through narrative and embroidery.
Stephanie Jenkins (English): She is an academic, actor and director, has a PhD from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in museum theatre. She considers theatre an important medium for exploring the past.
Nkamogeleng (Nkamo) Lebeloane (English and Setswana): She is a journalist, self-taught singer, dancer and writer. She sees theatre as a catalyst for introspection and wants it to be used as a tool to improve the lives of women and children.
Nokuthula Mkwanazi (English, Afrikaans, and isiZulu): She is an actor who is featured in SABC1 dramedy Makoti, a gender-based violence activist and a clown, who holds an MA in dramatic arts from the University of the Witwatersrand.
